We run a number of canoe and kayak courses for both young people and adults designed to introduce them to paddlesports and to give them the skills and conficence to progress onto independent participation within the sport. We have a number of ‘open’ courses for individuals to book onto but specialize in delivering bespoke courses for you and your group.
Paddlepower is an exciting scheme that has been designed to meet the needs of Young People aged 10-16 years of age. The scheme comprises of five awards, aimed at supporting a young paddler’s introduction and progression in Paddlesport. The BCU Paddle Power Scheme runs in the following levels:
BCU Paddle Power Start – Level 1
This course will complete the criteria for the BCU Paddle Power Start – Level 1 and include elements of BCU Paddle Power Passport Levels 2 – 5. This one day course provides the foundations for the young paddlers’ first session in this fun and exciting sport by introducing the basic strokes and safety aspects, and developing conﬁdence on ﬂat water. This course is essential for young paddlers wanting to progress through the Paddle Power Scheme
BCU Paddle Power Passport – Levels 2 – 5
The course aims to work through Paddle Power Passport Levels 2 – 5, developing basic paddle strokes, improving boat handling, and looking into more advanced skills
BCU Paddle Power Discover – Levels 6 – 9
The Discover course aims to work through levels 6 – 9 of the Paddle Power scheme. This course provides a seamless and continual development from the Paddle Power Passport levels. The course helps to develop independence by improving paddling and creating awareness of safety aspects aswell
BCU 1 Star Award
Ideal for the complete beginner or those with a little experience, this course introduces you to the basic strokes and safety aspects of this exciting sport giving you the confidence to control your boat on flat water
BCU 2 Star Award
This 2 Star course develops skills learnt during the 1 Star award and introduces some of the more advanced techniques such as support strokes. The course helps to create independence in the sport, and looks more into safety when on the water
Foundation Safety and Rescue Test (FSRT)
The FSRT course is designed to provide paddlers and coaches with the key skills to ensure the safety of themselves and others and provide rescue skills which can be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty. The course is a pre-requisite for those wishing to enter the BCU coaching scheme. Pre-requisites: Be a minimum of 14 years of age. Those wishing to use the FSRT to commence training as a boat-based coach must hold the 2 Star Award or be of that ability.
